PLEK Technology at Xotique custom shop.

What is PLEK?

For over 30 years, we have dedicated ourselves to the art of guitar making, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern precision. Our philosophy is simple: every guitar deserves to play at its absolute best.

Since introducing the Plek System into our guitar production in 2014, we have gained over ten years of hands-on experience with this cutting-edge technology. Along the way, we've worked with high-profile and in-demand artists like Allen Hinds and Paul Jackson Jr., refining our expertise and honing our craft to meet the highest standards.

This wealth of experience means that we can offer every customer the same level of top-tier service and attention to detail. Whether it’s restoring the mojo of a vintage guitar, refining the playability of a trusted workhorse, or fine-tuning a brand-new instrument, our mission is to help every player experience their guitar at its full potential.

Process of PLEK

PLEK SCAN

PLEK SCAN

PLEK can primarily measure and visually quantify the following:

  1. The condition of the neck and truss rod
  2. The height and shape of the frets
  3. The amount of neck relief (bowing)
  4. The degree of buzz (string rattle)
  5. The height of the nut and bridge saddles
  6. Abnormalities such as fret positions and lifted frets
  7. Scale length and string spacing
  8. The amplitude of the vibrating strings
THE VIRTUAL FRET DRESS

THE VIRTUAL FRET DRESS

By integrating the various types of information detected through the scan, it becomes possible to determine how to eliminate buzz. You can visually and clearly simulate different setups and decide in advance how much fret leveling or adjustment is needed before actually performing the work.

PROCESSING

PROCESSING

After determining the scope of work through the above Virtual Fret Dress, the fret leveling is carried out accurately and efficiently according to the pre-set parameters (usually completed in about 7–8 minutes). Unlike traditional manual work, this process minimizes the amount of fret material removed. Not only does it perform fret leveling, but it also reshapes the frets at the same time, resulting in a highly uniform and beautiful finish.

NUT FABRICATION

The PLEK system can also be used to create a new nut. It can reproduce the same specifications as the existing nut on the instrument, or be customized with freely adjustable string spacing, shape, and string slot angles. The height and shaping of the nut are critical elements that directly affect the instrument's quality and performance. PLEK allows for the precise creation of the best possible nut for each instrument.

DATA BASE

DATABASE

All instruments that undergo scanning or fret leveling are stored in a database. This means that any instrument that has been PLEK’d can always be returned to the same level of playability. Even if the frets become worn, it can be restored to its optimal condition while taking that wear into account.

All work is 100% guaranteed.

Key Features of the PLEK Machine:

  • 1. Precision Fret Leveling:
    • The PLEK uses laser scanning to analyze the height and alignment of each fret, creating a detailed 3D map of the fretboard.
    • It automatically adjusts the frets to a uniform height across the entire neck, correcting any unevenness that may cause buzzing or difficulty in playability.
  • 2. Computer-Controlled Setup:
    • The machine is programmed with highly precise algorithms that guide the cutting, leveling, and shaping of frets.
    • It can also adjust the neck relief, action, and intonation based on the specific measurements of the guitar and the player’s preferences.
  • 3. Accuracy and Consistency:
    • The PLEK machine is known for its high level of accuracy, with some systems offering an error margin as small as 0.001 mm. This level of precision is difficult to achieve with traditional hand tools.
  • 4. Fret Crowning:
    • After the frets are leveled, the PLEK machine can crown the frets (creating a rounded top), which is essential for smooth playing and minimizing fret buzz. The machine performs this automatically to a very consistent standard.

Advantages of the PLEK Machine:

  • Increased Playability: The most significant advantage is that it ensures perfect fretboard leveling and fret adjustments, leading to better string action, smoother playability, and fewer intonation issues.
  • Consistency: Because it is a CNC machine, it can replicate the exact same setup with each instrument, ensuring a high level of consistency across multiple instruments.
  • Remote Adjustment: Many PLEK machines are capable of measuring and making adjustments while the instrument is still strung and tuned. This makes setup and fret work quicker.

Applications of the PLEK Machine:

  • Fret leveling and dressing: Correcting uneven frets to improve the overall playability and reduce string buzz.
  • Neck relief and truss rod adjustment: Ensuring that the neck has the proper curvature to support a comfortable playing action.
  • Intonation setup: Adjusting the position of the bridge saddles or nut to ensure the guitar or bass stays in tune across the entire fretboard.
  • Custom setups: The PLEK machine is often used by high-end guitar makers or custom shops to achieve highly specific setups tailored to a player's preferences, such as low action without fret buzz.
  • The PLEK machine offers a level of precision and efficiency that manual methods simply cannot match.
